Lion family resting in the savannah

Top 5 Animals to See on an East Africa Safari

April 7, 2026 Updated May 27, 2026 5 min read

Lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, and cheetah often shape the wish list, but the best sightings come from matching parks to behaviour.

Most travellers arrive with a Big Five list, but East Africa becomes more memorable when the focus expands from names to behaviour, habitat, and timing.

Lions are strong in Maasai Mara and Serengeti, elephants are exceptional in Amboseli and Tarangire, rhino viewing is often strongest in protected areas such as Lake Nakuru or specialist conservancies, and cheetah sightings favour open plains.

Leopards are more elusive and reward patient guiding, while giraffe, zebra, hyena, buffalo, hippo, and birdlife often become unexpected highlights of the journey.

Planning note: tell us the species that matter most to you, then we can build a route that gives those sightings a realistic chance without making the itinerary feel forced.
